About me, my journey with corvids and
of course my
feathered family

If you love birds, you'll love my story and mission. A passion driven by love, loss and determination.

On June the 6th 2015, a little black bird came into my life and changed it forever...

Russell Crow was my best friend, he was the reason we set up Russell's Rescue and inspired me on a path to make a real difference with our feathered friends. He sadly passed after 8 wonderful years with us, leaving a legacy, but my heart was broken. The next month was unbearable, there seemed no point in continuing without Russell, he was my everything. I turned to drink to overcome my grief then one evening, out of the blue we received a message.

It was so shortly after Russell's passing - a raven! So we thought Russell had sent us a very unusual gift. This special young raven was called Glen. When he arrived I was shocked! We rarely meet these magnificent birds in Gloucestershire, so it had to be a sign that Russell wanted us to continue.

Glen took us on another remarkable journey...

I had a purpose again, Glen was an absolute joy to train and rehabilitate and at times a bit of a goof ball! But we didn't mind, he became part of the family. But it was all short lived, after just 11 weeks, Glen became incredibly unwell and passed, leaving our hearts broken once again. I turned to drink again, first Russell now my raven friend. I became a lost soul, but as I remembered his cheeky face I wanted to remember him in a special way like we remember Russell. So I set up Glen's Feathered Encounters and was not ready to give up just yet.

Then all paths led to Buddy...

Then we heard about a very special raven that needed a home. We travelled far to collect him and wanted to give him a chance. Buddy had a troubled start and major health issues, we sought help from our good friend and raven specialist Nick. Nick was incredible and helped save Buddy's life. Buddy has still got a long way to go, but growing in confidence every day.

I want to help others to help them...

After all the heart ache, the start of something special with my new friends, I decided after all these years of helping birds to make it official! The community Flock With Helen was born and 'Helen Motteram' as someone who's totally obsessed with our feathered friends. All these years of studying, voluntary work, TV and media appearance and of course my work with corvids has meant now I can really follow my passion.
